Stella Elkabes, Ph.D. receives a research grant from New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Research

Grant title:  The astroglial response to spinal cord injury:  modulation by a toll-like receptor 9 antagonist

Period of award: July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2020

Total amount awarded: $600,000

The studies proposed in this grant investigate the effects of a TLR9 antagonist on astrocytes at the glial scar following spinal cord injury.  The modulation of astrocyte proliferation, chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan production, migration and astrocyte-elicited chemotaxis of peripheral immune cells are studied by a combination of in vivo and in vitro approaches.
